April 9, 2014 | Jacksonville, FL
Yoga is regarded by many as a form of alternative medicine that offers particular benefits to people managing chronic conditions.
Baptist Health is offering free yoga therapy classes for breast cancer survivors. The first 8-week session starts April 24 and runs consecutively for the next eight Thursdays from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.
“Yoga has been shown to have tangible benefits in managing stress levels, increasing wellbeing and lessening the side effects of cancer treatment,” says Joan Ryan, a certified professional yoga therapist E-RYT500, PYT1000 and Reiki Master who leads the classes.
Ryan has become known internationally for her therapeutic programs to address challenges such as anxiety, arthritis, cancer, chronic back pain, sciatica, multiple sclerosis and irritable bowel syndrome.
The classes meet at the Hill Breast Center at 1235 San Marco Blvd., for a period of eight weeks. The first session of 2014 will be April 24 through June 12. The second session will be July 3 through August 21. The third session will be September 25 through November 13.
"Patients frequently ask, ‘What else can I do to help prevent cancer recurrence, aside from my recommended breast imaging, self-exams and oncology follow-up?,’” says Christine Granfield, MD, medical director, Hill Breast Center. “Yoga is a prime example. Studies have shown that regular yoga reduces morbidity and mortality of breast cancer by up to 50 percent, promoting wellbeing and improving our natural immune system.”
“Our goal at the Hill Breast Center is to provide a continuum of care and knowledge for our breast cancer patients well beyond diagnosis and treatment. Our yoga program is just one example of the unique healing programs we offer," Dr. Granfield adds.
Other class resources are Terri Bishop-Brahen, RN (stress and health); Ankit Desai, MD (postural health); also on hand will be a counselor, an acupuncturist and a mindfulness expert. Registration for the classes is free, but space is limited. Please register at http://yoga-therapy-breast-cancer.eventbrite.com
