Two Highly Respected Cardiology Groups Form Baptist Heart Specialists
Combining Strengths of Baptist Health and Physician Practices Will Improve Quality and Continuity of Patient Care

Today the physician practices of Jacksonville Heart Center and Southern Heart Group announce they have become a division of Baptist Health called Baptist Heart Specialists, forming a full-spectrum specialty practice for cardiology services that includes 27 specialists with eight offices serving patients along Florida’s first coast.
“Baptist Health has been a long-time partner with these two highly regarded cardiology practices who are known for providing outstanding compassionate and ethical medical care,” says Hugh Greene, president and CEO of Baptist Health. “This new partnership will combine our strengths so that we can further enhance quality and improve continuity of care to provide the best possible outcomes for our patients.”
“Baptist Heart Specialists was created to provide world-class, comprehensive cardiology care under one umbrella. Research, innovation, application of newer technologies and a commitment to providing the highest quality cardiovascular care are integral components of our vision,” says Joel Schrank, MD, FACC.
While the name of the practice is new, the physicians of the two groups intend to preserve their existing doctor-patient relationships. “We want to assure our patients that they will continue to be under the care of their regular cardiologist whom they have come to know and trust,” says Paul Dillahunt, MD, FACC. “Maintaining our longstanding relationships with our patients and referring physicians is of vital importance to maintain continuity of care.”
Office locations and phone numbers of the practices will remain the same, and so will the familiar staff. This new division of Baptist Health will encompass a complete network of cardiac and vascular services, providing an integrated system of cardiovascular care that is unprecedented in our region.
The physicians of Baptist Heart Specialists will continue to provide key leadership for the heart programs at Baptist Medical Center Jacksonville, Baptist Medical Center Beaches, Baptist Medical Center South, and Baptist Medical Center Nassau, all of which are Accredited Chest Pain Centers noted for meeting or exceeding national standards for evidence-based diagnosis and treatment of heart attacks.
“Above all, this is about improving people’s lives through excellent care by a cohesive and dedicated team of physicians, cardiovascular nurses, technologists and other healthcare professionals.” says Greene.
Baptist Heart Specialists are part of the team providing high-level care at Baptist Heart Hospital, Northeast Florida’s only hospital dedicated exclusively to cardiovascular care. Located on the campus of Baptist Medical Center Jacksonville, Baptist Heart Hospital provides comprehensive heart and vascular care with three fully equipped operating rooms; three cardiac catheterization laboratories; two electrophysiology laboratories; a state-of-the-art cardiac rehabilitation program, and Life Flight emergency air ambulance service. Baptist Heart Hospital also includes 88 private patient rooms; two intensive care units (48 beds); and the region’s only outpatient Congestive Heart Failure clinic. Baptist South recently added a new diagnostic catheterization laboratory and a cath lab is under development at Baptist Beaches, further indications of Baptist’s commitment to improve access to high-quality cardiovascular care throughout the community.
Patients of Baptist Heart Specialists will have greater access to clinical research trials, a continuation of Jacksonville Heart Center’s participation in more than 250 research trials over the past 15 years, including numerous medical device and stent trials, as well as medication trials for many well-known medications such as Lipitor, Zocor, Coreg, Crestor, Plavix, Effient and Ranexa.
