Larry D. Wagoner, Ph.D., joined Baptist Health in 1979 as the hospital’s first supervisor certified by the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education, Inc., and led the way for Baptist to become a fully accredited training center in 1980. This accreditation remains and has provided more than 1,000 student units of training (a unit consists of 300 clinical/service hours and 100 curriculum/supervision hours). He has been the director of the department for over 20 years.
Wagoner completed baccalaureate studies at Indiana University and Oakland City University with a final major in Religion and Psychology. He completed a Master of Divinity in Psychology of Religion at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. He holds a M.Ed. in Mental Health Counseling from the University of North Florida and a Ph.D. in Marriage and Family Therapy and Supervision from the University of Florida. Pastoral Care and Supervision residencies were completed at High Plains Baptist Hospital, Amarillo, Texas and Methodist Hospital of Indianapolis. Counseling training was completed at Buchanan Counseling Center, Indianapolis, The Samaritan Center, Jacksonville, FL, and Growth Pointe Training Center, Jacksonville, FL.
Prior to joining Baptist Health Wagoner served 4 years as Children’s Chaplain and Training Supervisor at Methodist Hospital of Indianapolis and 4 years as Pastoral Counselor specializing in child therapy at the Buchanan Counseling Center, Indianapolis. Wagoner sustains a private counseling practice and does periodic teaching in the University of North Florida Mental Health program. He has served on the Board of the Mental Health Association, and currently serves on the Board of Community Hospice of Northeast Florida and the Southeast Region Association for Clinical Pastoral Education.
Wagoner is a Board Certified Chaplain with the Association of Professional Chaplains, Fellow with the American Association of Pastoral Counselors, Clinical Member and Approved Supervisor with the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy, and Florida Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist.
