Yesterday, we completed a key milestone in connecting the community to advanced cancer care by raising a sky bridge over San Marco Blvd. that will connect the original Baptist MD Anderson Cancer Center and our beautiful new facility opening later this year. The Florida Times-Union shares more about this unique project and its impact in Jacksonville: http://ow.ly/w4Bv30iLKHt #endcancerJAX
At Baptist Health, we believe every team member, no matter their role, is a caregiver. Last month, Carol Tatro from our Patient Access Services team at Baptist Medical Center Beaches checked a young woman into the ER who complained of falling and hitting her head the night before. On instinct, Carol knew something wasn't right and went straight to her manager. She said, “I know I'm not a nurse and we are extremely busy, however, I am concerned for this young woman and would like someone to go check on her."
Recognizing that Carol was right, our ER team quickly ordered a head scan, which showed a massive brain bleed. Intubation and life saving measures were activated, and the patient was transported by helicopter to Baptist Jacksonville downtown for treatment. Had this young woman remained in our waiting room for any length of time, there's no telling what would have happened. Carol was truly this young woman's angel that day. #BaptistHealthHero

Years ago, Bridget Johnson, Senior Consultant in our Privacy Office, dreamed of a future as a respiratory therapist — but a clinical rotation on a pediatric unit left her emotionally drained. Her career counselor recommended she pursue a health care support role instead.
Johnson first joined Baptist Health as manager for Scanning and Customer Service in Health Information Management. A year later, she became the director of Health Information Management at Baptist South, our first fully digital electronic medical record hospital. She served in that role for 12 years before transitioning to senior privacy consultant in 2017.
For Johnson, the culture and mission of Baptist Health is why she continues to work here and why she plans to spend the rest of her career here. She finds it rewarding that her personal mission and the mission of her employer align.
For her, some of that personal mission includes recognizing that, in America and at Baptist Health, black Americans and women are still celebrating many “firsts." And that makes it all the more important to honor the contributions African Americans have made to this country.
“Now, more than ever before in my lifetime, there seems to be a devaluation of the influence and role that people of color play in our society," Johnson said. “People have sacrificed so much for the things we take for granted today. #BlackHistoryMonth allows us to reflect and acknowledge their contribution, their sacrifice and the greatness of a diverse America."
Congratulations to Baptist Medical Center South hospital president Nicole Thomas on being named to Modern Healthcare's Top 25 Minority Executives in Healthcare! This award recognizes leaders who are making a difference not only in their industry, but also in their community.
Appointed in July 2016, Mrs. Thomas is our first female hospital president and leads the second-largest hospital in the Baptist Health network. She is also one of only a handful of African-American hospital presidents in Florida. She led a multi-million dollar expansion plan at #BaptistSouth and implemented a number of initiatives aimed at improving workflow and patient satisfaction. One of those, a fast-track triage program in the ER, was put to the test when the hospital saw 500 patients during Hurricane Irma in September 2017.

We are proud to celebrate #BlackHistoryMonth with team members like Tyrone Stewart. During his 20 years in the United States Army, he acquired many of the skills he now uses in his role as Baptist Cardiology Institute's director of Clinical Operations. But he also found something else: a sense of consistency, of camaraderie, of equality. Growing up in Fernandina Beach, that wasn't always the case.
Stewart remembers, even at an early age, experiencing racial prejudices in his own home town. He took to heart the words of Colin Powell: "A dream doesn't become reality through magic; it takes sweat, determination and hard work." And so, when he turned 17, Stewart left home for a life in the military. The job would take him to, among other places, Germany, Hawaii, Virginia, and Louisiana.
“I have witnessed a society that has grown tremendously, in terms of equality," Stewart said. And for him, that is a reason to celebrate this month.
Come join us at Health & Safety Saturday at Baptist Medical Center South until 1pm today to tour our new patient tower, talk with a doc, spin to win and more!
"I’m going to beat this,” Steven Cantor told his friends and family after he was diagnosed with bladder cancer at age 46. “I hope everybody is in the ring with me.”
His friends and family took those fighting words seriously. They showed up in groups of six or seven to sit with Cantor while he received chemo treatment at Baptist MD Anderson Cancer Center: http://bit.ly/2sOHDFZ #endcancerJAX

The Schrank Scholar Award began in 2015 in recognition of Joel Schrank, MD, who practiced in Jacksonville for more than 40 years and is considered among the top cardiologists in our region.

A decade ago retired CSX conductor Sam Starling, now 80, underwent two open heart surgeries in three days and spent weeks in an induced coma. It was an unpleasant experience he never wanted to repeat.
So when he learned his heart's mitral valve needed to be replaced, he worried he wouldn't survive another open heart procedure. Luckily his doctor, Ruby Satpathy, MD, was able to offer an alternative - a minimally-invasive procedure that had Sam fixed, feeling better and back home in three days: http://bit.ly/2o4yuU0 #HeartMonth

"You are not alone. You are not to blame. You will get help." Valerie Plame Wilson on #postpartumdepression encouraging women and community members at tonight's Sisisky-Kleppinger Lecture @wjctjax.
Changing healthcare for good in our community is what Baptist Health is all about. Access, affordable care, and a lack of knowledge about services and dozens of other factors contributed to a wide range of health care needs among communities in northeast Florida. That is the conclusion of a newly released study commissioned by a group of local health care organizations. The Jacksonville Metropolitan Community Benefit Partnership, which includes Baptist Health and @wolfsonchildrens, recently released its second Community Health Needs Assessment. You can read Baptist and Wolfson's hospital-specific reports at the link in profile.
