Charu Raheja was on vacation in Miami when she started having a painful headache.
The 41-year-old Jacksonville resident decided to wait until the next morning to return to Jacksonville to seek care since her headache subsided. An MRI by her neurologist showed she had bleeding in her brain caused by an AVM (arteriovenous malformation), an abnormal tangle of arteries and veins.
She was referred to Baptist Stroke & Cerebrovascular Center where Ricardo Hanel, MD, PhD, performed minimally invasive surgery to stop the bleeding.
Being a patient was a new experience for Charu, who is used to helping others through the company she owns with her physician husband.
“We have two children. I kept looking at them and hugging them (before the surgery),” Charu said. “At the hospital, Dr. Hanel came in and held my hand and made me feel better. He is confident in what he does and has a lot of experience.”
Dr. Hanel was able to repair the damaged blood vessels in her brain by injecting a specialized glue that was guided through a catheter from her femoral artery in her leg up to her brain.
Charu was home within a few days and has returned to
work. “I attempt every day to get better,” Charu said.
“Stroke is preventable and treatable. When treatment is needed, you want to come as soon as possible to a center that has all tools available, the most experienced surgeons, and a dedicated team ready to act.”
