An allergy drop of prevention equals a pound of cure
You’ve probably heard of allergy shots, but did you know that they come in a convenient drop form, too? Actually, allergy drops have been around for more than 100 years, but, up until the late 1980s, only available in a hospital setting. Today, easy-to-use allergy drops are readily available with a doctor’s prescription, and can be safely used in or outside the home, wherever you choose. Using once-daily allergy drops is not only more convenient than going to a doctor’s office for a routine shot, they typically cost less than a shot and require much fewer clinic follow-ups.
“The data is overwhelming clear that allergy drops are both safe and effective. I've been amazed at how helpful the drops have been for my patients over the years,” said Paul A. Walker, MD FAAOA, a board-certified otolaryngologist with Baptist Health ENT Specialists. “Typically, the drops are used once daily under the tongue for three years. Studies have documented long-term allergy relief years after completion of the regimen.”
According to Dr. Walker, allergy drops are administered under the tongue in gradually increasing dosages until the patient develops a tolerance to the allergy-causing substance. This methodical process, ultimately recalibrates the immune system, effectively alleviating the previous exaggerated response.
Allergy drops are especially beneficial for adults and children who have difficulty tolerating allergy shots, and those with multiple severe allergies, needle phobia, or asthma. They are prepared with the same FDA-approved antigens found in shots and qualify for Health Savings Account or Flex Spending reimbursement. Allergy drop prescriptions can only be ordered by a physician. You can’t purchase them over-the-counter at your local drug store. So, contact your primary physician to order your prescription. Why get a shot when you can get a drop.
