Baptist South receives recognition for surgical patient outcomes from the American College of Surgeons

When it comes to selecting a hospital for surgery, safety is top of mind. Baptist Medical Center South has received “meritorious” recognition in surgical patient care from The American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (ACS NSQIP®). Baptist South is one of only 76 participating hospitals in the nation to achieve this distinction in 2024, which is the most recent evaluation period.

ACS NSQIP is the preeminent nationally validated quality improvement program that measures and enhances the care of surgical patients. This program measures actual surgical results 30 days after surgery and uses that data to make improvements in quality surgical care.

"We are extremely proud of our highly skilled surgical team at Baptist South, which provides high-quality advanced medical care for our patients every day," said Kyle W. Dorsey, FACHE, hospital president of Baptist South. "This achievement of our team's dedication to patient safety from The American College of Surgeons is a well-earned recognition of our commitment to patient safety."

As a participant in ACS NSQIP, Baptist South is required to track the outcomes of inpatient and outpatient surgical procedures and collect data that assesses patient safety and can be used to improve the quality of surgical care.

The goal of ACS NSQIP is to reduce surgical morbidity (infection or illness related to a surgical procedure) and surgical mortality (death related to a surgical procedure) and to provide a firm foundation for surgeons to apply what is known as the “best scientific evidence” to the practice of surgery.

Baptist South has a comprehensive general surgery program, including minimally invasive and robotic-assisted procedures.

“We participate in programs like this because we want patients to have the best outcomes possible,” said Jeremy Goodman, MD, FACHE, vice president and system quality officer for Baptist Health. “We’re committed to continuous improvement in quality and safety and we’re proud to receive this recognition that exemplifies that commitment.”
