Patients can have advanced procedures at Baptist Medical Center Nassau with robot-assisted surgery

Faster recovery times, smaller incisions among many benefits

Residents in Nassau County now have access to an advanced surgical robot, allowing surgeons to perform minimally invasive surgeries leading to faster recovery times, smaller incisions and reduced pain.

Robot-assisted surgeries provide surgeons with enhanced precision and high-definition 3D images which provide a magnified, detailed view of the patient’s surgical area. The robot is 100% controlled by the surgeon from a console, much like a virtual reality gaming system. The robotic system translates the surgeon’s movements into precise actions.

Regan Hill, MD, a gynecologic surgeon, has used the da Vinci Xi Robotic Surgical System for a variety of procedures, including hysterectomies, ovary removal, endometriosis surgery and prolapse procedures. The surgical robot also has been used for urological surgeries and general surgeries, such as hernia repair and appendectomies.

“The high-definition, 3D camera provides amazing detail of the patient’s anatomy,” she said. “I am able to see the area in a much more magnified way, which allows me to be more precise, resulting in faster recovery for the patient.”

Time spent in surgery for patients is reduced as well. “A robotic hysterectomy can take as little as 45 minutes, while it took roughly an hour-and-a-half previously. Most patients go home the same day as surgery and many require only over-the-counter pain medications, eliminating the need for prescription pain pills,” Dr. Hill explained.

“Some of my patients feel so well that I have had to remind them at their two-week appointments that they’ve had major surgery. Their recoveries are shorter,” Dr. Hill said.

Since December 2023, 50 patients have benefitted for robotic-assisted surgery at Baptist Nassau.
