There may be other brand names for this medicine.

When This Medicine Should Not Be Used:

This medicine is not right for everyone. Do not use it if you had an allergic reaction to bentoquatam.

How to Use This Medicine:

Lotion, Liquid

  • Use this medicine only on your skin. Rinse it off right away if it gets on a cut or scrape. Do not get the medicine in your eyes, nose, or mouth. If you do get the medicine in your eyes, rinse them well with cool water for at least 20 minutes. Tell your doctor if you have eye redness or eye pain that does not go away.
  • You can buy the medicine without a prescription. Read and follow the instructions on the medicine label. Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions about how to use this medicine.
  • You must use this medicine at least 15 minutes BEFORE you are exposed to poison ivy, poison oak, or poison sumac. When the lotion dries, it keeps the oils in the plants from touching your skin and causing a rash.
  • Wash your hands with soap and water before and after you use this medicine.
  • Shake the bottle well before each use.
  • Apply a thin layer of the medicine to the affected area. Rub it in gently.
  • You will need to put more lotion on your skin at least every 4 hours, or sooner if the medicine rubs off.
  • When your skin no longer needs protection, wash the medicine off with soap and water.
  • Until the medicine on your skin has dried, do not get close to a fire.
  • Store the medicine in a closed container at room temperature, away from heat, moisture, and direct light.

Drugs and Foods to Avoid:

Ask your doctor or pharmacist before using any other medicine, including over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products.

  • Do not use other creams, lotions, or skin medicines on the same areas of your skin that you are using bentoquatam, unless your doctor has told you to.

Warnings While Using This Medicine:

  • Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • Do not use this medicine to treat a rash caused by poison ivy, oak, or sumac.
  • Do not use this medicine on children younger than 6 years, unless ordered by your child's doctor.
  • Keep all medicine out of the reach of children. Never share your medicine with anyone.

Possible Side Effects While Using This Medicine:

Call your doctor right away if you notice any of these side effects:

  • Allergic reaction: Itching or hives, swelling in your face or hands, swelling or tingling in your mouth or throat, chest tightness, trouble breathing

If you notice these less serious side effects, talk with your doctor:

  • Mild skin redness or irritation

If you notice other side effects that you think are caused by this medicine, tell your doctor

Call your doctor for medical advice about side effects. You may report side effects to FDA at 1-800-FDA-1088
